This skills-verified course aims to address the gap in mental health care environment and better prepare interprofessional healthcare workforces (allied health, social work etc.) who are working in mental health care settings.

OVERVIEW

Within the scope of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a learner will be able to teach a patient/client with mood/anxiety disorders to change their thinking, problematic emotions, and behavior in a manner that supports recovery.

Micro Description: Explore the fundamentals of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) by gaining competency in teaching patients/clients with mood and anxiety disorders to transform their thought patterns, problematic emotions, and behaviors to facilitate recovery. This microcredential delves into the core components of CBT; equipping you with the skills to foster awareness of mental illnesses within patients/clients, guide individuals in challenging their thought records, encourage opposite actions to negative reactions, and introduce exposure therapy to support therapeutic outcomes.

COURSE OUTLINE

Week 1: Welcome

You will be given an introduction to skills, graded activities, and the Yellowdig community platform.

Week 2: EMOTIONS, FEELINGS, PHYSICAL SENSATIONS

Emotional Awareness, Harms of Emotional Reactions, Identifying Physical Sensations, Providing Emotional Validation, Labeling Emotions, Coping and Relaxation Techniques

Week 3: NON-JUDGMENTAL AWARENESS 7 MINDFULNESS

Judgmental vs Nonjudgemental thinking, primary and secondary responses, teaching nonjudgmental awareness, teaching present focused awareness

Week 4: THOUGHTS

Automatic Thoughts, Thinking Traps, Flexible Thinking, Thought-Records, Core Beliefs

Week 5: BEHAVIORS

Emotional Avoidance, Emotion-driven behaviors, exposure hierarchy, opposite actions

  • When does the course start?

    Facilitator-led course start times can be found next to the course names and descriptions.
  • How much time is required of me?

    They typically require between 2-3 hours a week of course work. For Facilitator- led microcredentials, there is one hour a week of on-line instruction from the facilitator.
  • Do I have to show up for class?

    Attendance during facilitated time is highly recommended as it provides the most value to the microcredentials with time to learn from industry experts, network with classmates, and deeper understanding of content. However, attendance is not mandatory and all sessions are recorded and posted afterwards on the learning platform.
  • How am I evaluated?

    There are weekly multiple choice questions that will guide your learning progress then learners are given a final assignment where they will apply their learning to a practical assignment. A facilitator will evaluate the final assignment and award a digital badge if the final assignment is completed successfully.
  • How long is the course?

    They are 6 weeks long with 2-3 hours a week of course work.
  • Will this skills-verified course get me a job?

    They are a great way to differentiate yourself when searching for a job. The digital badge can be added to social platforms and resumes to demonstrate your skills. TALENT works closely with learners to guide and advise on learner's career journeys.
